HRT Not Working for Weight Gain? Here’s What’s Often Missing

Before I started HRT, I tested everything and prepped my body first. Here's what happened next...

Why HRT Alone Isn't Enough

HRT can ease many menopause symptoms, but it isn’t designed to single-handedly reverse weight gain, particularly around the middle. Cortisol, blood sugar regulation, liver detoxification pathways, and gut health all influence how your body responds to hormones, including the ones you’re now taking. If these are out of balance, HRT has to work against that, not with it.

What I See Most Often

Working with women in this exact position, a pattern comes up again and again:

  • Chronic stress and elevated cortisol, often going unaddressed for years
  • Blood sugar swings from inconsistent eating patterns
  • A liver working overtime to process hormones and metabolites, without the nutritional support to do it well
  • Underlying inflammation that HRT alone doesn’t touch

None of this shows up in a standard blood test at your GP. It’s why women can be on HRT for months, doing everything “right,” and still not seeing the results they expected.

A Different Starting Point

Rather than treating HRT as a fix on its own, I work with women to understand what’s happening in their body first, through targeted testing (DUTCH, DNA, comprehensive bloods), and then build a plan that supports hormone metabolism, cortisol regulation, and blood sugar stability alongside HRT, whether you’re already on it or considering starting.

This is the exact approach I used on myself before starting bio-identical HRT. Read my case study here.
